Of the over 2,000 paintings and drawings in my shop, I believe this to be the oldest. It is a very large (44" by 33" on the stretchers---112 cm. by 84 cm.) oil on canvas, unsigned, attributed to the "School of the Veneto". The painting is CURRENTLY VIEWABLE IN PARMA, ITALY, where it was recently restored by a highly regarded professional. The painting was originally purchased in Los Angeles in 2002 in damaged condition, with an unfortunate tear through the boy's face and extensive old overpaint.. Sotheby's auction house in London expressed interest in handling the painting and, after stabilization of the face tear by a Los Angeles restorer (not complete restoration), it was offered in London on December 3, 2003 in the sale of Old Master paintings. Unfortunately it did not sell at that auction. (The temporary photos are from the archived auctions on the Sotheby's website). It is now physically back in Parma, Italy, with a fine paintings dealer, after a restorer removed old overpaint and properly saw to the repair of the boy's face area. The restoration process revealed the painting to be considerably older than the Sotheby's original dating ("17th century"), and the restorer commented the painting had likely originally been longer in the vertical dimension. Now the painting has been returned to display condition and awaits its new owner. The painting can be viewed in Parma by appointment. Contact me for more details.
