This is a beautiful, understated winter landscape oil painting on panel, signed at lower right by noted Avon, Connecticut impressionist painter CONSTANT RAPHAEL FURRICK (1888-1966), measuring 11 1/2" by 15 1/2" (19" by 23" as framed). Strangely, considering the quality of the work, there seems to be little information available on the artist. He was I believe born in Poland. Perhaps the work is scarce, as I see only one auction record. This example of a somber snow covered field bordered by bare trees would be an asset to any wall. Connecticut is the birthplace of American impressionism, what with the Cos Cob and Old Lyme painters, and these paintings today are rightly popular and sought after. I would imagine that Furrick associated with better known artists. The painting is, I believe, rather dirty, perhaps from smoke, and it would certainly benefit from a professional cleaning. It appears that someone might have taken a swipe at cleaning it around the signature area, it being whiter than the brownish areas above it. In the process the amateur managed to weaken the signature itself, but, luckily, not erase it.
