For the collector of vintage plein air art, this is a classic drawing on tan paper executed in Italy in the year 1924 by well listed, frequently auctioned California plein air artist DANA BARTLETT (1882-1957). This drawing measures 8 1/2" by 11 1/2" inside the framing (12 3/8" by 15 1/4" as framed). It is signed in a longhand signature at lower left, and at lower right is inscribed "Venice Italy" and the date 1924 once again. An old plaque bearing the artist's name also reads "Santa Lucia Bridge". Bartlett's landscapes of eucalyptus sell for many thousands at Moran and Bonhams auctions, and even still life works can bring above $5,000. According to the lengthy Hughes biography, the artist was born in Michigan, and he went to New York for study under William Merritt Chase and Charles Warren Eaton. Thereafter followed a period of transience, working in Boston, Portland, Oregon and San Francisco before making a final move to Los Angeles in the 1920's. In 1928 he opened an art gallery in that city, having had an exhibition of his work the previous year at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. During the 1920's he traveled extensively in Europe as well. Later in life he was a well known member of the Southern California art community and a teacher at Chouinard School of Art. Works are included in the collections of major museums. CONDITION: There is an approximately 8" tear, generally horizontal, extending from left of the bridge arch to the tunnel under it and somewhat above and to the right of it. Speculation is that this tear might have somehow occurred while framed. It is not immediately obvious, as it is somewhat lost in the detail, but one soon notices it. A professional paper restorer could no doubt minimize it or even make it invisible but of course such work would be costly. The work could be enjoyed as it is, though; particularly when viewed from a distance it is not an issue. ASK FOR MORE DETAILED IMAGES OF THE TEAR. A little research would no doubt show that this is a study for a painting of the same name.
