Oil on canvas painting titled on the frame in pencil "Flow Up Falls", 12" by 16" and 1 1/2" wide original frame, signed at lower right "SMITH" and dated there "20", and signed again on the reverse. This is a rather early work showing what I gather to be Rainbow Falls, a Big Island landmark not all that far inland from downtown Hilo. I believe they have acquired the "flow up" name as at times in certain light conditions it might appear that the water is actually flowing UP. This painting is EXTREMELY DIRTY, with SMOKE GRIME causing such browning/yellowing as to make it difficult to even imagine how attractive the work underneath will turn out to be once it's cleaned professionally; in its present state it's difficult to photograph. In the distance one can see the snow capped peaks of the big Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa volcanoes in the center of the island. I imagine that the sky will be blue and the snow white once the smoke is taken away. Other details include the rocks in the river bed above the drop, and a wide banana leaf type vegetation at lower left. On the stretcher is an old label of the Pacific Picture Framing Company, 17 S. Hotel Street, Honolulu, T.H. (Territory of Hawaii). This would be an outstanding addition to any collection of Hawaiiana and Hawaiian paintings, or tropical art. I am not aware of a listing for this artist but perhaps a detailed dictionary will be published showing many painters who are not now known. including other Hawaiian paintings.
