Watercolor on paper painting of a street scene in a French city, probably Paris, 18" by 10 1/2" inside the mat (29" by 21" as framed), signed at lower left "Jack Hines" followed by "NWR" (for "Northwest Rendezvous, and art group) and the date 1984 preceded by the copyright symbol. This is somewhat atypical subject matter for this well known artist of the American West. Hines is listed in the authoritative 1982 landmark book "Contemporary Western Artists" by Peggy and Harold Samuels. The biography there tells of an artist who was born in Nebraska, drifting to first Los Angeles for art training and then New York, where he was an active illustrator. By the early 1970's Hines found himself in Montana where he lived out the remaining years of his life, living close to the land he loved while painting scenes with cowboys and indians in traditional activities. Hines has been the subject of articles in Southwest Art and other publications dealing with art of the American West. This work is in immaculate fresh condition with vivid colors and no fading nor foxing. The label of the prestigious high end Trailside Gallery of Scottsdale, Arizona and Jackson, Wyoming is affixed to the reverse. Western themed work by Hines appears regularly at the annual Charlie Russell auction in March in Montana. Silvery frame and fillet are quite complementary and the linen liner is clean. This work is ready for the wall. See the net for much more on the artist, whose works have exceeded $8,000 at auction. Photos were taken at steep angles to try to minimize pesky reflections in the glass.
