Oil on canvas painting of a matador in his suit of lights, 31" by 23", unframed, not signed but inscribed on the stretcher with the name of the artist and title "portrait of a matador".. This is a circa late 1940's or perhaps 1950's work I would guess, by noted listed artist JOSEPH WEISMAN (1907-1994). Weisman was born in the east but was already in California as a young man. He studied with well known California artists Millard Sheets, Barse Miller, and Clarence Hinkle, and exhibited at such venues as the 1939 San Francisco Golden Gate International Exposition and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. This painting has been abused and is in need of restoration, as there is an "L" shaped tear at upper left (edges match) and there are several other puncture tears each less than an inch long (see photos of one above the shoulder). But the paint is stable and the work is most certainly worth restoring and framing, at which point it will be again most impressive. See the net for more on the artist. .
