This is a beautifully executed late 19th or early 20th century work on canvas measuring 17 1/2" by 24 1/4" (28" by 35 1/2" as framed) signed in red at lower right by listed Swedish female painter ALMA HALLSTEINSON (1859-1934) (and signed again in pencil on the stretcher). The name is also given sometimes as HOLSTEINSON. The subject is a gingerbread style Victorian house on the shore of one of Sweden's many lakes, all painted in an impressionist style. The painting is in excellent condition, is very nicely framed and is ready for the wall. It took me a very long time to figure out the signature at lower right, but I have finally done so and subsequently conducted a little research on the artist. Hallsteinson is not widely known today but in her time she was considered a talented Sunday painter who in the 1880s and 1890s hung with a group of advanced lady painters in Sweden's rural areas. If you google the name you will see her name coming up in discussions of this little group and their corner in the history of Scandinavian art. A Danish auction house I contacted has suggested that the scene suggests a portion of Sweden near Finland. All in all, this work far transcends the typical Scandinavian Sunday landscape paintings which have flooded the American market thanks to internet auctions of decorative works acquired cheaply in Scandinavia. An old label on the back shows that the painting was once sold at Butterfields auction house in San Francisco. Ask for more photos as the Ruby limit of nine does not permit me to show the fine brushstrokes and subtleties of this poetic painting. SEE HUNDREDS OF OTHER PAINTINGS NOW IN MY SHOP.
