Pastel on paper laid on board, 15 1/2" by 19 1/2" (19" by 23 1/2" as simply framed---no glass), signed at lower right by noted American pastel artist ANDREW GUNDERSON (1888-1964). This is a rather typical example by the artist, who is grouped today with such pastellists as William Chandler and Glatthaar. These artists around the turn of the century and the early years of the 20th century produced large numbers of original pastel landscapes and still life images, which are today very widely distributed around the US and Canada. Increasing interest over the years in the seemingly ubiquitous works has led to research into the careers and production/distribution methods of the artists. Gunderson was born in Iowa and by the early teens of the new century he was based in Illinois, where he set up a company to distribute the works. See the net for more on Gunderson and the American pastel artists. CONDITION: This example has traveled without glass, so it has accumulated a couple of smudges of the pastel. Also, there is a puncture at top in the sky. You might wish to mat this out when reframing. See other pastel works in my shop and HUNDREDS OF OTHER PAINTINGS AND PRINTS.
