Oil on masonite double sided unframed painting, 23 7/8" by 19 1/2", signed in orange at lower right "H.H. SHAW", the subject on one side six figures, a man, bare breasted women and children, in an obviously tropical village, the other side three figures, the woman bare breasted. This is a painting by listed American artist HARRY HUTCHINSON SHAW (1897-1989). Shaw is today most closely associated with Florida and Pennsylvania. In the course of a long life, worked generally in an impressionistic style but some works are obviously in the modernist category, as is the case here. This painting shows some wear on the signed side, especially on the lower couple of inches, with some paint missing at lower extreme corners, but the unsigned side is in rougher shape, with a lot of stray paint marks in a roughly rectangular pattern, as if someone had painted another painting while it was just lying on top of this one. So, the frameable presentable side is the signed side, and the other side is a bonus situation for the purchaser unless money is spent on restoration. See the net for other images of works by Shaw.
