LOUIS-JOSEPH (1932-2007) extremely early work by important Haitian artist
****ONE OF TWO WORKS BY THIS ARTIST IN MY SHOP (the other from 1979)****This is an oil on board painting in the classic primitive or "naive" style, 17 1/2" by 19 1/2": inside the liner, (25 1/2" by 27 1/2" as framed), depicting a joyous and colorful street festival with music, SIGNED TWICE, once at lower left and again at lower right, and dated there 1952, by the important, early Haitian artist LOUIS JOSEPH (1932-2007). This is an exceptionally colorful and detailed work, which dates to the dawn of Haitian art as we know it today; the Centre d'Art scene only came to life in the late forties, so, this would have been executed in the newly developing style within five years of that dawn. Joseph, according to information acquired from the net, was born in Port au Prince in 1932, and possibly just fairly recently passed away, in 2007; he would have been only twenty years old when he executed this. Joseph studied at the important Centre d'Art, which served as an incubator of sorts for a number of Haitian artists who went on to become well known. There are a few auction records, but according to the website I referenced, Joseph's works are "rare". This one is in generally very good condition with just some common light grime and possible cigarette smoke residue accumulated over the decades. It has an interesting provenance, having come directly from the eclectic, Beverly Hills estate of noted Hollywood Oscar winning screenwriter Daniel Taradash (1913-2003), known for his screenplay of "From Here to Eternity", among many others.
