Pastel on soft old board, the subject a light green and white sensitive spring landscape, measuring 14 1/4" by 19 1/8" (19 1/2" by 24 1/2" as framed), not signed on the front that I can see but on the reverse in old hand is written "Blossom Time/F J Girardin/The Old Watering Place/To Leighton DeMen". This is a satisfying impressionistic work by a Kentucky-born artist who early in life painted in downstate Indiana, where he was a fixture in the early 20th century art colony, and who later in life painted in California. Most Girardin works are in oil; this is the first pastel I have come across. It is presently without glass, and has likely for some time traveled without glass, which has resulted in a few scuffs, a tiny dig or two at far left, and a horizontal crack in the old paperboard at right. I think that the work needs to be removed from this unsuitable frame, then professionally framed with non acidic materials, at which point it will really come to life. It looks to be quite old and I would imagine it to be from the earlier years of the 20th century. Ask to see more detailed photos of the condition issues. See the net for more images of works by this impressionist artist. .
