Oil on canvas laid on board painting of a young woman in a long white dress among trees and flowering shrubs in a spring landscape, 8 1/2" by 10 1/2" (12 1/2" by 14 1/2" as framed), apparently unsigned but inscribed on the reverse "In the Pupke's Garden/by Lydia Longacre". This is a beautiful impressionistic work in the classic early 20th century manner that flourished in the art colonies of such east coast locales as Old Lyme, Connecticut, Cos Cob, Connecticut, the Cape Ann area near Boston, and the eastern reaches of Long Island. Longacre does not have an extensive auction record or biography, (some have been auctioned, but not a lot); but she is mentioned in a number of publications, including Falk's Who Was Who in American Art, and the Dictionary of Women Artists. She was a student of William Merritt Chase, and exhibited at the National Academy and the Art Institute of Chicago. The quality of the work stands up for itself. Condition is excellent, other than being laid on the board. The frame is modern and uninspiring.
