Oil on canvas nocturne late afternoon/dusk winter scene with a lone figure in front of a castellated residence, clouds scudding over the moon, measuring 17" by 14", (20" by 17" as framed), signed at lower right by noted American nineteenth century artist GEORGE HERBERT MCCORD (1848-1909). This is a nicely painted work by an artist considered to be among the "second generation" of Hudson River School painters. McCord was from the New York and New Jersey area, but he painted in Europe, and for a time in the western United States. A prolific painter, works appear at auction consistently, though prices vary according to subject matter. It appears that his luminous, classic Hudson River style American extensive landscapes bring the highest prices. McCord was a member of the National Academy, and he exhibited widely. This painting is extremely dirty, having likely spent much of its life in the residence of a smoker. With a professional cleaning to remove the years of yellowish grime, it would likely be nearly unrecognizable. There is also a tear at upper right center that measures about 1" across the "L" shape, and a few other light abrasions, two of which are nearly tears, but not quite. So, the painting is in quite original condition and the new owner can choose his own restorer. Let me know if you'd like to see more images. See the net for much more on this artist. .
