**PAIR** of pastel and pencil drawings on paper affixed to board at edges, each 9 3/4" by 13 1/2" inside the mat, currently in simple contemporary inexpensive frames, one signed in pencil at lower right "GROLL". These appear to be possibly scenes of Mexico or even Spain (the artist studied in Europe) by listed American artist ALBERT LOREY GROLL (1866-1952). Groll was New York-born, but spent a lot of time in Arizona, New Mexico and other points of the far west, painting and drawing the expansive landscape. Earlier in life he was in Provincetown and Europe, painting and sketching. Oils of empty desert landscapes are very popular with collectors, bringing significant sums at auction. The artist was trained in Munich and London. Later he exhibited widely, at the National Academy, Art Institute of Chicago, Panama Pacific exposition, and the Pennsylvania Academy, among other venues. He was a member of the Taos Society of Artists and the American Watercolor Society. This pair of drawings was acquired outside of Boston recently. They are not titled, but the subject matter seems to me to have been Mexico or southern Europe, either Spain or Italy, since the mountaintop in one drawing seems to show a town on the summit; note also the blooming spring trees and the architecture. Both drawings are heavily foxed, the brown spots rather evenly distributed. I don't know if a paper conservator could lessen or totally remove these, but it would be worth investigating. Email me for more photos, as the maximum one can upload to Ruby is nine and that doesn't suffice when two works with condition issues are involved. See askart for images of the artist's typical works. .
