Gouache, ink and pencil on thin board snow scene, probably in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, measuring 4 3/4" by 5 3/4" (12" by 13" as framed) signed at lower right by noted California artist FRANK WILLIAM CUPRIEN (1871-1948). I removed this from the ornate frame with plaque found interesting information---this was executed perhaps quite spontaneously, on what looks like a piece of a mailing envelope, complete with circa 1940's stamps, the initials "FWC", apparent title, "timberline", and, typed, "Prof. F.W. Cuprien/Laguna Beach". See photo I've included, showing the reverse. Cuprien is best known for his works showing the sunset and lighting effects over the waves in Laguna Beach, where he was the president of the Laguna Beach Art Association for a time, but he also painted other subject matter, of which this is an example. The painting just came out of the estate of a deceased Los Angeles collector. See askart for more information on this noted painter, the works of whom have sold for substantial sums at auctions of California plein air art. .
