Gouache painting of a rooster, on tissue paper laid down on foamboard, 27" by 18", unframed, signed at lower right by important Mexican painter JESUS "CHUCHO" REYES FERREIRA. The artist is a major figure in the history of modern Mexican art. His works appear in important exhibitions and in the national museum alongside the works of much better known painters like Diego Rivera, Orozco, Siqueiros, etc.. An attractive hard cover book was published recently, describing his entire body of work, which included works of art not falling within the description of painting. See the net for much more information on the artist, the works of whom have been sold at Sotheby's auctions of Latin American art in New York. A painting by the artist owned by Katharine Hepburn sold for $8,500 in the Sotheby's auction of her estate. Reyes Ferreira's paintings are usually on tissue type paper, and this one is typical in that regard. The paper is very delicate and as a result many of Ferreira's works are in compromised condition. This one appears to be in that category, with what I believe to be significant overall losses; they are so evenly scattered however, due to the strangely balanced distribution of those losses, that the image still "works". See the net for much more on the artist.
