Watercolor on heavy paper laid on board, 30" by 22", unframed, signed at upper left corner in ball point pen "Ernest W. Scanes, 3/25/66, Otsego Remnant". Scanes is best known as a Michigan artist, certainly a Midwest artist, but also, due to his illustration of books and ads, he is known as an illustrator as well. I have previously owned a 1947 gouache, also of skiers, and am currently offering a charcoal drawing by him in my shop. Evidently, a relative of the artist resides or resided here in the Los Angeles area, and that relative came upon a large cache of the artist's work in various media, that group having been now widely distributed. This work is in excellent condition with the exception of a lightly stubbed corners and some edge bumps and tack holes and note that the artist himself evidently while working out this image painted part of the image, including the lower central trees and the skiers, on another piece of paper that has been pasted in, so that there are horizontal lines where this piece of paper has been added. This being the artist's intent, and the artist's own hand, I consider this an interesting look into Scanes' creative process, rather than a flaw. See the other example in my shop.
