The work is executed in charcoal with a little white gouache, on paper, the unframed sheet 12" by 10", signed at lower right in the artist's typical manner. Gladys Emerson Cook (1899-1976) was known for her sensitive and accurate depictions of dogs, cats and other animals. She was a painter, illustrator, and graphic artist. Today a number of museums include her works. She exhibited at the National Academy of Design and other major venues. This sheet is moderately browned from age, has a "roll", and the extreme left lower corner is stubbed with some damage, but, this could be easily framed/matted out as it's far from the image area.
