Oil on canvas landscape oil, unmounted/unstretched, contained loosely in a decorative and complementary modern white metal frame, measuring 5" by 7" (7 1/2" by 10" as framed), signed at lower left "A. Schilling". I'd date this to the late 19th century or early years of the 20th........the artist exhibited in Chicago at the Art Institute, St. Louis at the world's fair, and at the Pennsylvania Academy, and elsewhere. Though listed in a number of reference works, there doesn't seem to be a lot of information on him. He did complete many landscape etchings and they are encountered more frequently than are his paintings. His name is sometimes spelled "Shilling". The work is charming, peaceful, and quietly impressive, despite its small size. A cleaning would no doubt brighten it, especially the sky area. The condition is otherwise good, with a slight vertical crease, for want of a better word, in the sky at top right. I don't find this to be very noticeable at all. See the askart listing and Falk's Who Was Who in American Art.
