Vintage circa 1880's oil on canvas, 20" by 14" and 1" wide old dark oak simple frame, likely original, signed at lower right side with the typical conjoined "MStraus" signature of well listed Northern California artist MEYER STRAUS (1831-1905). Straus was born in southern Germany, and was in the US by 1848. He traveled the southern states, including New Orleans and Mobile areas, as well as Ohio and Illinois. Due to deteriorating health, he moved to California by the 1870's, where he painted theater background scenes in San Francisco. Today, Straus is best known for his landscapes of Northern California. Once in the west he also traveled north to Oregon and Washington, and elsewhere in the Northwest as well, where he obviously executed this little landscape, titled faintly on the reverse canvas "On the Upper Columbia". The painting needs restoration, as there is paint flaking at bottom left, in an area about 3" by 3". A bit above that is further slight bubbling and there is some paint loss at bottom right. All of this is evidently due to moisture exposure in the past. This will likely need to be relined, and a thorough cleaning to remove smoky soiling will restore this to its original charm. .
