A pretty 20” antique French Lanternier open mouth bisque head doll on a Jumeau composition body and dressed in a period outfit offered by Snowdrift Antiques.

A. Lanternier & Cie was a Limoges, France based porcelain factory that produced bisque dolls and doll heads from about 1915 through 1924.

This young lady stands at about 20" tall. She has a bisque socket head with pretty blue glass sleep eyes, lovely painted facial features, a slightly open mouth with 5 upper teeth, pierced ears, and a replacement blonde human hair wig. Her head is marked “Fabrication Francaise / A. L. & Cie. / Limoges / Cherie 8. The skull cap and wig are no longer adhered to her head – they can be re-glued at the new owner’s discretion. Her eyes open and close with ease. I did not find any flaws to the bisque under bright light, see image 5. There are tiny chips by her pierced ears holes, see close up pictures of her head, these are not uncommon and don’t detract from her overall value.

She has an eleven-piece composition and carved wood Jumeau body that is stamped in back in blue: BEBE JUMEAU / BTE S.G.D.G. DEPOSE. There is an old sticker, above the stamp, from the store that sold her but it is basically unreadable, see image 8. She has been restrung. The body has numerous places where the paint is cracked, bubbling, or missing, see image 10 for an example of her feet and images 3 and 4 to zoom in on other areas. The body has tape around the chest as it once held a Mama squeaker box that has been removed by a previous owner. In back you can see the opening covered with wire so that the Mama sound could be heard.

She wears a sweet hand-made period outfit consisting of a light floral printed cotton dropped waist dress with lace accents at the sleeve hems and neck. There is also a row of ribbon insert lace at the top of the skirt section, the silk ribbon is a replacement as the original ribbon was frayed beyond use. The dress closes in back with four mother-of-pearl buttons. There are a few small blue spots on the front of the skirt section, see image 11.

Her underclothes consist of a white cotton chemise/slip with a pleated skirt and lace trim that is worn over a one-piece white cotton chemise and pantalets combination that also has lace trim. These close with string and drawstrings. The chemise pantalets combo piece has a repair on the left side.

The pink ribbon in her hair is a replacement. On her feet she wears intricately knitted pink socks and vintage off-white patent leather shoes.

This hard-to-find French Lanternier Cherie bisque doll is such a cutie, just look at those expressive eyes and sweet smile!
