Fresh from the North Shore of an Chicago Estate is this superb example of a hand painted 1900's Portrait Tankard by the Donath Decorator Adolph Heidrich.
Adolph Heidrich was an outstanding 19th century listed Chicago China Decorator. Alan Reed, the author of the Pickard China Collectors Book, believed that Heidrich possibly decorated for the Chicago Pickard Decorating Studio in and about 1903--1910. Heidrich was well known for his animal and monk pieces including Dogs, Deer, Elk, Moose, and Lions. Heidrich also decorated for the Edward Donath Studio in the early years of the 20th Century. Some of his fine works can be seen on P. 258 and 259 of Reed's Pickard Collectors Book.
In 1915 Heidrich opened up his own decorating studio...having learned his art talent from his well known artist father Anton. Very few of Heidrich's pieces ever surface and are eagerly sought after by collectors. Alan Reed has a two page section in his book [P.262-263] on the A.Heidrich Studio which operated from 1915--1922.
This beautiful hand painted piece is an 11" Tankard displaying " Sir John Falstaff", a character created by William Shakespear. Note his quality and detail art work.
The Tankard has been heavily gilded at the top and on the handle. The piece is in good condition with some very slight wear and is without nicks, chips, or other damage....with the top outside gold and handle gold being in better than excellent condition...with some very minor gold wear on the top and inner rim .
Heldrich has prominently signed the base. The Tankard displays Donath's Mark # 6...1910--1915 and an early J.P.L. France Limoges mark.
The piece will make a nice addition for your Pickard or hand painted collection.
