Royal Worcester 1891 Set of 7 Hand Painted "Chain of Petite Pink, Lavender, & Yellow Enamel Roses" Floral Cups & Saucers
Fresh from a Chicago Estate is this beautiful Set of 7 Hand Painted Enamel Floral Cups & Saucers. The gorgeous Set was made especially for Burley & Co, Chicago Illinois.
Burley and Co., which first opened their doors in Chicago as early as 1838 was the premiere import company in the Chicago area and perhaps in the U.S. importing fine china, glass, earthen, stoneware, and of course porcelain blanks. Many of your Chicago China Decorating Studios, including the premiere decorator in the country, Pickard, bought their blanks from Burley & Co.
Burley & Co. was also noted as a retailer dealer, having a store front in downtown Chicago, and imported from all the great European China companies including Limoges, Schlegelmilch Porcelain [RS Prussia] and numerous English companies such as Royal Doulton, Royal Worcester, Staffordshire, Minton, & Copeland.
Burley & Co. was so well known across the European continent, that they had their own mark put on, at the factories, by the individual European porcelain makers, including all of the above.
The department store located at 83 & 85 State Street specialized in porcelain, pottery and glassware. Importing and distributing German porcelain at first they began importing Bohemian porcelain around 1880. In 1883 the retail portion of the business was sold to a nephew, who ran his business under the name of 'Burley & Co.' and owned a decoration studio on Wabash Avenue. That part of the business was heavily involved in china decorating from 1885 to 1931 and not only imported British Royal Worcester porcelain but also sold various blanks to Pickard. Over time, 'Burley & Co.' distributed Haviland and John Maddock (England) as well as Smith-Phillips and Union Porcelain china. Furthermore, 'Burley & Co.' supplied china to at least six railroads beginning in 1891 and the 'Cloverleaf Steamboat Line' in circa 1900. In the year 1907 the businesses were rejoined and for the next years were very successfull until it was decided to sell the company to 'Albert Pick & Co.' in 1919, a deal that was complete by 1923.
