Attractive E.W. Donath Studio of Chicago 1905 Hand Painted "Iris" 7-1/2" Floral Pitcher

Beautifully decorated is this vintage 1905 hand painted Floral Pitcher by the E.W. Donath Studio of Chicago.

Edward Donath was born in Selb Bavaria in 1871 coming from a family of China Decorators who worked for both Hutschenreuther and Rosenthal. Young Edward was a skilled decorator at an early age and many experts believe he also decorated for these two great Studios before emigrating to the U.S. in 1893. The skills that Donath learned in Germany almost immediately landed him a job with the new & fledging Chicago Decorating Studio, Pickard in 1894. Donath started his own Studio in downtown Chicago, while also still working for Pickard. By the time Donath finally ended his tenure at Pickard in 1905, Pickard was well on its way to being the foremost China Decorating Studio in America. Donath was now a well known and accomplished Artist having entered his fine creations previously into the Central Arts Association Exhibition as well as the Chicago Ceramic Art Association Exhibit at the Chicago Art Institute.

The Edward Donath Studio ran from 1897-1903 & 1905-1928. During this time he employed some of the best artist in Chicago including former Pickard Artist, Adolph Heidrich, Max Rost, LeRoy, George,Stahl, J.Heinz, J. Rene, as well as Carl Koenig. The Studio met with great success and became one of Pickard chief rivals over the next 25 years. Alan Reed in his Pickard Collectors Book devotes eight pages to this great studio and many fine photo examples of its great works.

This is a fine example of Edward Donath Studio..........a beautiful hand painted Floral Pitcher measuring 7-1/2" tall and decorated on both sides with large and deep purple "Iris", on stem & leaf, and entirely outlined in gold. The beautiful floral displays sits against a light cream yellow background with heavy gold accenting flowing down from the top rim.......a all gilded gold handle and a gilded gold base.

The beautiful Donath Studio hand painted "Iris" Floral Pitcher is in excellent condition and totally free of chips, cracks, or other damage with the gold being excellent with some minor gold wear on the base.

The attractive hand painted "Iris" Floral Pitcher displays Donath Studio Mark # 5 which was used from 1905--1910.

The charming Donath Studio hand painted "Iris" Floral Pitcher shows and displays exceptionally well.
