Incredible Pickard Studio of Chicago 1900's Hand Painted Pair of "Pheasant & Floral" 16" Urn/Lamps" by the Artist, "REAN"
Fresh from a Chicago Estate comes these out of this world gorgeous, Pickard Studio of Chicago, hand painted Scenic Urn/Lamps
decorated by Pickard Studio Artist, Maxwell "Rean" Klipphahn.
Maxwell Rean Klipphahn, was one of the early Pickard Studio decorators having started with the Chicago company in 1898. Wilder Pickard recruited Klipphahn from a pottery company in Trenton, NJ. Klipphahn was to lead a long illustrious becoming one of Pickard’s most accomplished Artist. Klipphahn was an expert in fruits and flowers in the naturalistic, stylized, and conventionalized formats. He created numerous floral designs
throughout his career.
On the side, Klipphahn ran his own Decorating Studio from 1915-17, but always seem to return to Pickard when they beckon. Somewhere between 1911-1919, Klipphahn worked for the Wight Art Studio along with former Pickard Artist, Phillip Wight and Howard Reury. During his time at the Wight Art Studio, Klipphahn used his initials on his artwork and creations; “M.K.” His Pickard decorating career ran from about 1898 to 1930, non-continuously, and usually used his middle name, Rean, for his signature versus his initials. Alan Reed, in his Pickard Collecting Book, has both a bio and over a dozen photo examples of his outstanding work.
This beautiful hand painted Pair of Scenic & Floral Urn/Lamps, which measure 16" tall on base & 15" tall the Urn/Lamps, has been exquisitely
decorated with the front side displaying a large & colorful Pheasant, entirely outlined in trace gold, sitting on a Flowering Apple Blossom Tree.
[Note the Flowering Apple Blossoms art also outlined in trace gold, while the branches are gilded gold]. The background décor is a beautiful & rich
iridescent Deep Purple/Cobalt Blue. The opposite side of the Pair of Urns display Flowering Apple Blossoms from head to toe....all outlined in
Trace Gold. The Urn lids are a combination of deep red & white with gold highlights and a fire gold finial. Also, please note the incredible large
& ring loop fire gold handles.........which add great beauty to this exceptional Pair.
The outstanding Pickard hand painted "Pheasants & Apple Blossoms" Urn/Lamps are in excellent condition and totally free of chips, cracks, or
other damage with the gold being exceptional and only slightly less than pristine throughout and normal age wear on the Urn lids.
The gorgeous Pair of Pickard Studio "Pheasants & Apple Blossoms" Urns/Lamps were not taken apart to verify a mark. It is a well noted fact
that Maxwell Rean Klipphahn used his middle name, "REAN" for signing his art creations while working for Pickard. In this case, "REAN" has
been boldly signed on both Urn/Lamps.
