Beautiful Weisley China Co. 1930's Hand Painted "Violets" Floral Ewer by the Respected Artist, "Josef Henke"

The Weisley China Co. was an early 1900's Michigan China Decorating Studio which successfully competed with the well known D'Arcy China Studio of Kalamazoo, MI. Weisley China employed several highly skill artist, the most prominent being Josef Hencke.

Josef Henke came to Kalamazoo, Michigan around 1903 and began working with D’Arcy Art Studio as a china painter. It was a skill he learned as a boy back in Haida in today’s Czech Republic. By 1915, he was working on his own out of his home on Edwards Street. During this time, probably late 20's to early 30's Henke also decorated for the Weisley China Studio. At the start of World War II, when the U.S. stopped imports from Germany, his china painting work came to a screeching halt. He and his wife relocated to West Virginia, where there was work painting in a glass factory. But by war’s end, Henke was back in Kalamazoo. Back in Kalamazoo, he started painting wall plaques with designs of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Henke painted the remainder of his life and died in Kalamazoo in 1965. As a professional China Decorator, his wonderful hand painted floral creations are on par with the finest, early 1900’s, Chicago China Studios of the day including Pickard, Brauer, Donath Osborne, and Stouffers. Today, many Collectors, especially from the Midwest & Michigan, seek out his beautiful creations.

This beautiful hand painted Ewer, which measures 4-3/4" tall, is a nice example of Henke's artist talent. The attractive bulbous Ewer has been superbly decorated with large and lifelike "Violets", on stem and leaf, against a background color of cream. Heavy fire gold covers the top rim, outer rim, handle, and base of the Pedestal Ewer.

The superb hand painted "Violets" Ewer displays an early "Weisley China Hand Painted" mark and has been signed, "J. Henke".
