This is wonderful and scarce example of the "Flying Griffin Design" Grill Plate used by the Southern Pacific Railroad, circa 1922--1936 and weighs about 2-1/2 pounds.
The beautiful designed blue decor Southern Pacific Railroad Grill Plates, which was manufactured by the Scammell's Trenton China Co, displays blue mythical flying Griffin Birds with what resembles a Greek God or Mythical bearded man's face in the center above the two Griffins. The rest of the detailed design displays artwork showing Grapes on Vines, Floral arrangements, and Ivy. The detailed outer border contains addition Griffins.
The Author, Phil DeCosta, who produced the "Southern Pacific Lines Maintenance of Way Cars: Photos, Diagrams, Collectibles, Dining China," states that the scarce Griffin Design Grill Plate pattern was used by the Southern Pacific Railroad's Sunset Limited Passenger Train, circa 1922--1936. I have enclosed a photo of the Southern Pacific RR Sunset Dining Car.
The attractive Southern Pacific RR "Flying Griffin Design" Grill Plate is in excellent condition and totally free of chips, cracks, or other damage.
