Maxwell Rean Klipphahn, was one of the early Pickard Studio of Chicago decorators, having started with the Chicago company in 1898. Wilder Pickard recruited Klipphahn from a pottery company in Trenton, NJ. noting his outstanding artistic skills. Klipphahn was to lead a long illustrious and most interesting career, becoming one of Pickard’s most accomplished Artist. Klipphahn was an expert in fruits and flowers in the naturalistic, stylized, and conventionalized formats. He created numerous floral designs throughout his career. On the side, Klipphahn ran his own Decorating Studio from 1915-17, but always seem to return to Pickard when they beckon. His Pickard decorating career ran from about 1898 to 1930 and he most often used his middle name, Rean, for his signature. Alan Reed, in his Pickard Collecting Book, has both an extensive bio and over a dozen photo examples of his outstanding work.

This is an spectacular and scarce Pair of matching Pickard Scenic hand painted Urns, circa early 1900’s. Coming from an New England Estate and very large in size, one would surmise that this was a custom made order.

The beautiful matched Pair of Pickard Urns measure a very large 16" tall including the brass colored base.....and a eye-popping 15-1/4" tall from the top of the base to the top of the finial. Though custom made to eventually become a matched Pair of Lamps with all the hardware added, it appears that the original owner had a change of heart and never wired or made the gorgeous Urns into lamps but maintaining them strictly as decorative Urns.

The Urns are incredibly decorated from end to end with two separate "Garden Scenes" on each lamp as shown in my photos, which honestly don't do the justice of picking up the incredible beauty of the Pair. One of the "Garden Scene" display a beautiful Floral presentation within a gated and walled Estate Garden with a combination of wild Pink Roses on one side and beautiful purple and yellow flowers on the opposite side of the path. The opposite side of each Urn displays a "Garden Scene" outside of the stone wall with a combination of ground covered Yellow Daisies and Red Roses and to each side climbing wild pink roses. The Pedestal Base, top of the Urn, and lid have all been decorated in a beautiful cobalt blue with heavy and fancy decorative gold gilding.

The attractive Pickard "Garden Scene" Urns are in excellent condition and totally free of chips, cracks, or other damage......with the heavy gilded gold near pristine condition. The beautiful Scenic Urns appear to have been used strictly for displays for these past 100+ years.

Though I have not taken the Urns apart to search for a mark, the long time Pickard Artist [some 30 years], Maxwell Rean Klipphahn, did decorate and sign this beautiful art creation with his signature, "Rean".

The Pickard "Garden Scene" Urns are quite imposing and will be a beautiful showpiece where ever they are displayed.
