J & C Bavaria 1896 Hand Painted "Sioux Indian Chief with Warbonnet" 9-7/8" Plate by the Listed Chicago Artist, "F.Grunewald"
Mrs F. L. Grunewald started her own Chicago China Decorating Studio in 1896 after having been involved in a larger China Decorating Studio in the early 1890's. She was an early forerunner of the great Chicago Studios that were still to open.....including Pickard, Brauer, Donath, Osborne, & Stouffer. She had great success because of the high quality of her artwork.
This is an outstanding example of Grunewald portrait china painting.....an early J & C Bavaria 1896 hand painted Portrait Plate.
The striking and well executed Portrait, which measures 9-7/8" wide, depicts a "Sioux Indian Chief with Warbonnet" against background colors of cream yellow brown, several shades of brown, and a cream lavender. Look closely at my photos, as the incredible detail is nothing short of a master decorator at her best. Additional gold gilding graces the outer rim.
The exquisite "Sioux Indian Chief" Portrait Plate is in excellent condition and totally free of chips, cracks, or other damage.
The striking "Indian Chief" Plate displays an early "J & C" Bavaria mark and has been signed, in gold script, by the listed Chicago Artist, "F. Grunewald".
The outstanding "Sioux Indian Chief with Warbonnet" has been exceptionally painted showing and displaying exceptionally well.
