Gorgeous Antique Victorian Carved Black Whitby Jet Cameo Panel Link Mourning Bracelet with Box.
This wonderful antique Victorian Mourning Cameo Bracelet is made from carved Black Whitby Jet panels. Whitby Jet is a semi precious organic gemstone formed over millions of years from the fossilised remains of the modern day Monkey Puzzle, and similar trees.
To the Victorians, mourning was more about sentimentality than misery. Mourning jewellery was used as a tribute or memento to remind the wearer about their love for the person they had lost. Death was a regular occurrence in Victorian times, thanks to pervasive diseases like cholera and scarlet fever. For this reason, the loss of a loved one was not a shocking event, but a sad part of everyday life. Victorian mourning jewellery was almost always black or featured black – symbolising darkness and death. Whitby Jet and Vulcanite were the most popular materials, but onyx, black enamel, dark tortoiseshell, French jet (moulded glass), pearls and bog oak were also popular.
The Bracelet is elasticated and will fit any wrist size, the original elastic had long since perished and has been replaced with a strong black jewellery elastic. One of the panels was broken but has been repaired well as shown in picture fourteen. The Bracelet is in very good antique condition as shown and is very wearable. It comes with the box shown although the box is not original to the Bracelet and has been added by us for safe postage and storage.
