Wonderful Pair of Mens Antique Victorian Sterling Silver monogrammed Sailing Ship Themed Niello Work Cufflinks.
This wonderful pair of Mens antique Victorian Sterling Silver Cufflinks features an incredibly detailed Niello work Sailing Ship theme. Niello work has been around for thousands of years, the earliest example being found from 1550 BC.
Niello is a black mixture, usually of sulphur, copper, silver, and lead used as an inlay on engraved or etched metal, especially silver. It is added as a powder or paste, then fired until it melts or at least softens, and flows or is pushed into the engraved lines in the metal. It hardens and blackens when cool, and the niello on the flat surface is polished off to show the filled lines in black, contrasting with the polished metal around it.
The Cufflinks have a front face measurement of 1.8cm x 1.2cm, a length of 2.2cm and together they weigh 11.9g. They are not stamped (which is fairly typical for Victorian Silver) but test as Fine (Sterling) Silver. They are in excellent antique condition as shown and are very wearable.
We strive to describe and photograph all of our items clearly and truthfully. Unless otherwise stated, our vintage and antique jewellery is not cleaned. This is due to many requests for vintage jewellery to be left in it's original condition. If you have any questions about this item then please don't hesitate to contact me prior to purchase... Thank you.
