Originating from East Turkestan between 1900-1920, this antique transitional Khotan rug from Rug & Kilim has a lesser known, once-acclaimed field design. Hand woven in durable, high quality wool, the central medallion depicts an ornate eight-pointed star, a traditional multi-cultural symbol of heaven, warding spirits, and divinity. Depicted in light beige and sharp black against a rustic red background, the geometric sharpness of the medallion is mirrored by the Buddhist spandrels in the field corners, while the background is complemented by the inner borders meandering characters (similar to Japanese sayagata symbols of truth).
