This graceful cat, disguised as a woman, is adapted from a carved wood Asian netsuke. The traditional Japanese kimono lacked pockets so Netsuke (toggles) were devised as a means to hang pouches enabling the wearer to carry personal items. The original netsuke is in the collection of the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. This is on the original card from the Museum in Salem, Massachusetts.
Measures 2.25" tall and in excellent vintage condition. Signed.
