A lovely antique French circular reliquary with paperolles, a rare reliquary in wooden box with relics and a cross, 19th Century.
A round glass-fronted French stunning reliquary, dating from the 19th century. The cross is attached in the centre and surrounded by gold rolled, notched, cut paper.
Relics are thought to be endowed with healing powers, and hold a strong message about the resurrection. A saint's life provides a holy guide to believers, that their relics can still create miracles.
For the faithful, touching a relic could heal ailments and soothe troubled souls.
Paperolles (quilling) is an art form that has been practised during the Renaissance (especially in Italy and France) by nuns and monks who used quilling to decorate book covers and religious items. The paper most commonly used was strips of paper trimmed from the old gilded edges of books.
The reliquary measures about 5.5 x 5.5 x 2.5 cm or approximately 2.1 x 2.1 x 0.9 inches.

This is an adorable antique piece for a collector of ancient sacred art.
Considering its age the reliquary is in lovely antique condition, with some signs of ageing that in my opinion only enhance its true timeworn beauty and splendour today.
