This is a vintage Meerschaum pipe, hand-carved in Turkey. The massive piece was carved to depict Etügen Eke ("Mother Earth"), who is known in Mongolian and Turkic cultures as an Earth Goddess. Also, her name may originate from Ötüken, the holy mountain of the Earth and fertility goddess of the ancient Turks. The stem features an intricately carved lattice pattern as well. It's in great condition with no scratches or chips in the pipe. It was lightly used, but due to its construction, it has withstood the test of time quite well and is still sound at all joints.

A Meerschaum pipe is a smoking pipe made from the mineral Sepiolite, also known as Meerschaum. Meerschaum (German for "sea foam") is oftentimes found floating on the Black Sea in Turkey and is rather suggestive of seafoam. You can also find Meerschaum in Tanzania and parts of Pennsylvania.

When smoked, meerschaum pipes gradually change color, and old meerschaum pipes will turn incremental shades of yellow, orange, red, and amber from the base up. When prepared for use as a pipe, the natural nodules are first scraped to remove the red earthy matrix, then dried, again scraped and polished with wax. The crudely shaped masses thus prepared are turned and carved, smoothed with glass paper, heated in wax or stearine, and finally polished with bone-ash.
