19th century natural history winter diorama
We are proud to offer an exceptional, large 19th century natural history diorama.
A remarkable winter scene set in an ebonized & glazed display case containing a pair of both Rock Ptarmigans & Snow Buntings with a single Ermine in an icy, snow covered setting with rocky outcrops finished with realistic glass icicles. The reverse shows a makers mark however this has worn away over the years. This example is a real work of art, The crystal, icy effect is difficult to capture in a photograph however the setting shimmers in the light. A highly unusual and rare untouched example of exceptional quality. Taxidermy will always divide opinion but pieces like this illustrate perfectly how this fine earlier work is so very different to the often crude & tasteless later stuff.
Size in inches approx.: H 30” x W 22.5” x D 11”

Completely solid in structure and form, aged naturally across the casing and loss of painted section on the gold gilt and ebonised case. With some loose detailed which has fallen to the base of the scene inside of the diorama, not that noticeable due to the interior decor.
This is an aged object so expect age related wear as the photos aim to show however it is exceedingly difficult to photograph all the areas on this piece. Therefore, we strongly suggest reviewing all the photos provided as part of this advert and propose questions where sections / condition is unclear to avoid disappointment when purchasing.
