Three Vintage 1930’s, 50’s, 60's Store Christmas Activity Books and a Store Christmas Comic Book for Children
Pictured for sale are Three Holiday/Christmas Activity Books and One Comic Book that were given free to youngsters when they went shopping with their parents for clothing and toys during the Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Holidays.
Growing up in 1950's I remember quite well receiving these wonderful activity books from department stores and shoe stores when my mom took me shopping. The four booklets range from the year 1931 through 1960 and are listed below along with a description and the condition.
1.)1931 Activity Booklet from Pomeroy's Department Store in Reading, Pennsylvania. The booklet is titled, "Here are The Things That Santa Claus Brings" “But What Brings Santa Claus?”. The booklet has 16 fun-filled pages with 12 different activities for youngsters to do. Two pages are missing where a child would have written his or her letter to Santa and then dropped in a "Santa Box" on the six floor in Pomeroy's. The main store in Reading had over 324,000 sq. ft. with a bargain basement and six more floors. The entire sixth floor was full of Christmas presents for young and old and decorations which were seen by 10's of thousands of people as they visited the store. Pomeroy's opened on April 1, 1876, and added 14 stores over the years but with slower business due to the introduction of Shopping Malls they eventually sold out to the owner of Bon Ton stores in June of 1987. This store was by far one of the most beloved stores of the Babyboomer Generation during the 1950's and 1960's in all of Pennsylvania. It measures 7 1/2" x 10 1/2".
