Today I'm offering for sale 12 Pencil Sketches of Movie Stars drawn by an unknown artist. Almost every sketch is signed “R.W.S.Y.”. The artist did a wonderful job capturing the likeness of the movie stars who were seen in both silent and talkies in the 1920's and 1930's.
I researched over the internet numerous times without any luck in trying to match up the initials to an artist from that time period. I also asked for help online from anyone who recognized the initials and didn't receive any response.
Anyone who follows movie stars from the 1920's and 1930's will easily recognize every star this artist has drawn. All of the sketches measure 9" x about 11 3/4". Listed below are the names of the movie stars who I recognize.
1. Rudy Vallee; Four corners bumped and tiny piece missing from one corner. 2. Jimmy "Schnozzle" Durante; Three corners bumped and two tiny tears at one corner. 3. Stan Laurel; Four corners bumped and one tiny tear on right edge.
4. Oliver Hardy; Three corners bumped. 5. Lili Damith; Three corners bumped and one tiny tear on right edge. 6. Sonja Henie; Four corners bumped, tiny piece missing from one corner, chipping along top and bottom edges, small tear along right edge, and light stain along left edge near top corner.
7. Sonja Henie; Two corners bumped, tiny piece missing from one corner, and two tiny tears along right edge. 8. Constance Bennett; Four corners bumped. 9. Deanna Durbin; Four corners bumped, top corner piece missing, and top right corner and right edge has a few tears.
10. Ethel Merman; Three corners bumped, and one tiny corner piece is missing. 11. Elissa Landi; Three corners bumped and one small tear along right edge. 12. Greta Garbo; Two corners bumped, one tiny corner piece missing, and another corner piece is missing.
**Condition: All 12 pictures are in good condition. Please see our photos to get a better look at the condition of the sketches. There are light smudge marks or light finger prints from the pencil sketching. The edge wear that is explained above can easily be cut off leaving a very nice edge.
This artist captured on paper some of the most famous movie stars from the beginning of sound movies. Every star drawn started out in silent movies but when sound came to the big screen in 1930 most but not all became big stars. Many didn't make it mainly because they had terrible voices or were unable to memorize their lines.
I think any artist would love the challenge to research and maybe find out who this talented artist was. A cool gift for the artist in your family. Who knows you may be buying drawings by a very famous artist.
