It's spring training so I thought it would be neat to offer for sale three classic paperback books with stories about three of the greatest Hall of Fame baseball players to have ever played the game. Who can argue that Willie Mays, Ted Williams and Babe Ruth are players from the 1920's thru the 1960's and were the most recognized baseball players that were idolized by youngsters all across the country. Listed below is each book, its condition, and a some information about it:
1.)"My Turn at Bat-The Story of My Life" by Ted Williams as Told to John Underwood. Published by Pocket Book in April, 1970, and first published by Simon and Schuster in June, 1969. Ted Williams is without question one of baseball’s most controversial characters to play the game. He tells his life story from childhood through his incredible playing days as a Boston Red Sox, as the manager of the Washington Senators, and remembering his close relationship with Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Joe DiMaggio, and many others. The book has 232 pages along with 48 fantastic black and white photos that along with his life story make this a must read for all baseball fans. **Condition: The front and back covers are in good condition and the inside pages are in very good condition, very clean and bright. *Covers: There is a tiny tear and tiny crease mark at the top front edge, a tiny tear at the bottom of the spine, and minor chipping along the bottom front edge. There are corner bumps.
2.)"Babe Ruth-The Real Story of The King of Swat” by Tom Meany. This a Bantam Book Number 505, published in November, 1948, and copyrighted in 1947 by A. S. Barnes and Company, Incorporated. This book came out in 1948 just before Babe Ruth passed away on August 16th, 1948, at 8:01 PM in Manhattan Memorial Hospital in New York. The book has 174 pages with 8 pages of black and white photos which are really neat. There are 8 pages which list Babe Ruth's Complete Baseball Lifetime Records.
The author, Tom Meany, captures the real Babe Ruth that the fans knew and loved and captures all the great love he had for youngsters not only in New York but all over the world that flocked to meet him wherever he went. He would sign autographs for kids by the hours and many times stopped his car to join in with kids playing baseball in a street or at a sandlot.
When the Babe passed away his wife Bess felt that his fans should be given the opportunity to pay their last respects. The Babes casket was taken to Yankee Stadium where it remained for two days as 77,000 people filed past to pay tribute. Outside St. Patrick Cathedral a crowd of over 70,000 stood silent while thousands lined the streets as Babe Ruth's hearse made its way to the cemetery.
**Condition: The front and back covers are in Good- condition and the inside pages are in good condition, very clean. *Covers: Very clean, minor edge wear, corner bumps, and a tiny tear along the left back edge. The covers came with a plastic over them and this plastic is peeling away at the edges. There is also a crease mark down the length of the front and back covers. *Inside pages: There is a 3 ¼” tear at the spine edge of the first inside page, and a ½” tear at the top edge of one inside page.
3.)"Willie Mays" by Arnold Hano. This is a Tempo Book, first edition, Number T-139, from August, 1966, and copyrighted by Arnold Hano. His book is an up-to-the- minute chronicle of the Life of Willie Mays over the last six years leading up to the 1965 season and him winning the 1965 MVP Award. He also gives the reader the history of his early years and why kids all over America fell in love with his style of play. Willie May's famous basket style to catch a baseball and his hat always flying off his head as he ran around the bases was being copied by millions of kids all over America. Like Ted Williams and Babe Ruth there is only one Willie Mays.
**Condition: The front and back covers are in fair condition and the inside pages are in good- condition. *Covers: There is wear to the edges, wear and bumps at the corners, wear to the spine, and scribbling in ink on the back cover. There are pieces missing from the bottom front right corner and the bottom back left corner, several tears along the spine, a piece missing from the bottom of the spine, a 1” tear at the bottom front edge and a ¼” tear along the right front edge. *Inside pages: There is a 1” tear along the spine and a 1/3” tear along the right edge of the first inside page, a few pages have small edge tears, some corners have tiny crease marks, and a few words are underlined.
If you have young baseball fans in your family these three books will give them an idea of just how fantastic these players were and why they are in the Baseball Hall of Fame. These three Baseball books may not all be in the greatest condition, but they still will give a baseball fan a great insight into three of the best baseball players that ever lived.
