Mauch Chunk a coal mining town in Pennsylvania, was the epicenter of the industrial revolution on the east coast during the 1800's and the early part of the 1900's. Today I'm offering for sale a colorized photo postcard from 1909 showing two Mining Bosses standing in front of a Powder House in Mauch Chunk, Pa. The postcard is postmarked “Mauch Chunk, Pa., 2 PM, October 23, 1909”. The name of the sender is on the back. Also on the back it reads, “The Hugh C. Leighton Co. Manufacturers, Portland, Me., U.S.A., Printed in Frankfort /Main, Germany. No. 3380”.
**Condition: Good condition; There is minor edge wear, minor bumps at the corners, a crease mark at the top left corner, and a name is written in ink at the bottom right corner. There is light surface wear to the back and the stamp is missing.
Jim Thorpe nicknamed the (The Sleeping Bear) was called the Switzerland of America because of its scenic mountains and valleys and The Gateway to The Poconos. From the mid-1800's forward it was the biggest supplier of coal on the east coast during the Industrial Revolution and a transportation hub of the booming coal industry in America. At one time it was the home of 13 of the richest families in the country.
