Pictured for sale are 8 very rare sport related Matchbook Covers made by The Lion Match Book Company, New York, in the 1930's.
Around 1889 the first patented matchbook appeared in the United States and since then businesses have given them free to smokers by the billions. A number of the very early ones are valuable and are highly sought after.
During the Great Depression the Lion Matchbook Co. introduced the first matchbooks that featured advertising on and inside the covers giving businesses a unique and very inexpensive way to advertise. It was so cheap it only cost around $5.00 for 2,500 matchbooks in the 1930's.
Below is a description of two Baseball Matchbook Covers and their condition:

From the 1800's adults were smoking corn cob pipes, hand rolled cigarettes, cigars, and later massed produced cigarettes. The invention of the matchbook made life easier for every smoker.
Collecting matchbooks is a fun and inexpensive hobby to get into. Each matchbook cover gives a wonderful look at America showing all the different businesses that were found throughout our country for the last 70 plus years. I don't think it's very easy to find any store that gives out matchbooks in this era except smoke shops or specialty smoke stores.
A group of great vintage Matchbook Covers to add to your collection. A cool gift for the big sports fan. I'm sure they'll be quite surprised getting these very rare Lion Match Books from the 1930's.
