Pictured for sale is a rare photo postcard featuring a football team from 1923 called "Stack's Red Jacks". This is possibly a Semi-Pro, Pro, or College Football Team. Shown on the postcard are 20 players, three coaches, and a ball boy. On the player's jerseys it reads "Stack’s". There is a player in the first row holding a football which reads, "Stacks Red Jacks 1923”. On each side of the ball boy are leather football helmets. There is one player in the second row with only a "S" on his jersey. This photo postcard measures 3 3/8" x 5 1/4".
In my research I found there were quite a few semi-pro football teams in different parts of the country in the early 1900's. Since I found this postcard at an auction in Pennsylvania, it makes me think it was a team on the east coast. During the 1920's there was a Semi-Professional Pennsylvania "Coal League" so maybe Stack's was one of the teams in that league. Early teams most likely were sponsored by businesses in their home towns which might explain their name, Stack's Red Jacks.
**Condition: Good condition; *Front: There is light edge wear, minor bumps to the corners, a slight discoloration along the right edge(this is not too easy to see when holding the postcard, but easy to see on the scan picture which is what you are viewing), and a 1 ¼” crease mark along the top edge. *Back: There is light surface wear, and 1923 written in both pencil and in ink.
This photo is very sharp, bright, and clean for being 93 years old.
This 1923 Stack’s Red Jacks Football Team Photo Postcard would make a fantastic addition to any Collection of Vintage Football Memorabilia from the turn of the century.
