Pictured for sale are 8 wonderful "Ding Dong School Books" by Dr. Frances R. Horwich whose popular highly rated children's TV show of the 1950's is still called the best children's show from the Golden Age of Television. She was often called the Mr. Rogers of her time because of the soft calming way she addressed every child while preparing them for school, teaching good manners and respect for their parents and other children on her TV show.
Her children's books are some of the most beloved kid's books ever published and are highly sought after. Listed below is each book and its condition:
1.)"Lucky Rabbit", Book Number DIN 7, dated 1950, and published by Franhar Enterprises with illustrations by Ruth Bendel. A story about Lucky Rabbit, a hand puppet who came into the life of a little girl named Alice and all the wonderful times they had playing together. *Covers: Good; Clean and bright; Covers are clean with corner bumps, surface wear, and edge wear. *Inside Pages: Very Good; Clean and bright; There are two worn marks on the second page.
2.)"Debbie and Her Nap", Book Number 201:25, dated 1953, illustrations by Adele Wehr. A story of Debbie and how she spends her adventurous day leading up to nap time. *Covers: Fair+; surface wear, corner bumps and wear, spine wear, and edge wear; Three letters written in ink at the top edge of the back cover. *Inside Pages: Good; There is a name written in ink on the inside of the front cover and on the first page; a 1 ¼” tear on the first page, and three pages have tiny tears at the bottom edge.
3.)"The Big Coal Truck", Book Number 203:25, dated 1953, illustrations by William Neebe. A story of a little boy named Billy as he watches the coal man make a delivery to his house in a Big Red Coal Truck.*Covers: Good; Clean and bright; spine wear, corner wear and bumps, and light surface wear.*Inside pages: Fair+; Clean and Bright; Name, address, and date written is in ink and the number 8 is written in green at top edge of first inside page, ¼” tear at the bottom edge of 3 inside pages, 1” tear at bottom of one inside page; There is a 8” tear that is taped on the last page of the book. The name of a little boy from St. Paul, Minnesota, is found on the first page.
4.)"I Decided", Book Number 204:25, dated 1953, illustrations by Marge Opitz. A story about Jean and her mom as they plan a trip to the supermarket, the hardware store, the drug store, and then to the department store. At the department store mom tells Jean she can get a gift for herself. Jean has a tough time deciding what to get. You'll be surprised what she picked out.*Covers: Fair+; spine wear, surface wear, edge wear, and corner wear and bumps.*Inside Pages: Good; clean and bright; a name was erased at the top edge of the inside of the front cover; two tiny tears at bottom edge of two inside pages, and most of the corners have crease marks.
5.)"My Big Brother", Book Number 214:25, dated 1954, illustrations by Mina Gow Mclean. A story about how Marie and her big brother George and how they spend the day together after mom needs to go away for a short time leaving George in charge.*Covers: Good-; bright; surface wear, corner bumps, corner wear, and edge wear; water spots along top edge of front cover and at two places on back cover. *Inside Pages: Very Good; Clean and bright; 1/4” tear at bottom edge of one inside page.
6.)"Grandmother is Coming", Book Number 216:25, illustrations by Ruth van Tellingen. A story about all the excitement when Sandra and her brother Michael learn that their grandmother is coming in one day to visit and everything they do to get ready before they see her. *Covers: Fair+; Bright; surface wear, corner wear and bumps, spine wear, edge wear, and some minor scribbling in blue ink on front cover. *Inside Pages: Good; clean and bright; two 1” tears on one inside page, one tiny tear at bottom edge of one inside page, crease marks on some of the inside pages; a name is written in blue crayon and other words in red ink on the inside of the front cover.
7.)"Mr. Meyer's Cow", Book Number 220:25, dated 1955, illustrations by William Neede. A story about a big black and white cow named Sally Ann. A little girl named Judy along with her dad take time to milk Sally Ann.*Covers: Fair+; surface wear, corner wear and bumps, and edge wear. *Inside pages: Good; There is a date and name written in ink on first page and this page have a small tear and a few soil spots; the remaining pages are clean and bright.
8.)"We Love Grandpa", Book Number 225:25, dated 1951, with illustrations by Dorothy Grider. A story about little Carl and Larry and how they spent time with their grandpa who was watching them as mom and dad were out shopping. Oh what a wonderful time they had! *Covers: Good; surface wear, corner wear and bumps, and edge wear. *Inside pages: Very good; clean and bright.
Way back in 1953 at 4 years old I can still remember watching Ding Dong School every morning many times with my mom by my side.
