Today I'm offering for sale a piece of New York City history in the form of this extremely rare 1919 book titled, "Metropolitan Blue Book…An Intimate Guide of New York City and Vicinity".
The book shows driving directions (Auto Trips) over all roads within a radius of 50 miles of New York City. The book was compiled and edited by The Automobile Blue Book Publishing Company which was established in 1909.
The guide goes into great detail giving the descriptions of Hotels, Restaurants, Road Houses, Shops, Theatres, and Points of Interests in all five boroughs in New York City plus all the wonderful monuments and historic landmarks, and standard Road Guide of America. It also shows the Automotive Trips within a Radius of 50 miles.
There are 2,685 places listed to visit that are extremely well written in one or more paragraphs throughout the 736 pages. The write-ups in themselves are like a history lesson of New York City. You will also see a number of black and white photos of the city and 12 pages of hotels that you can stay in while visiting the city.
There are 48 maps plus 4 fold out maps of the city giving the owner of this book directions on how to get around the city and the areas outside the city in 1919.
I'd say a number of the places mentioned in this book may have been torn down and no longer exist. This book will show you what was in and around New York City at the turn of the century.
Also inside are some fantastic ads that you'll enjoy reading and seeing for the very first time.
**Condition: The leather front and back covers are in very good condition, very clean. The inside pages are in very good condition, most all pages very clean and bright.
*Covers: There is minor wear to the spine, wear to the top and bottom of the spine, a tiny tear at the top and bottom of the spine, minor edge wear, minor surface wear, and remnants of a label at the bottom of the spine.
*Inside pages: The front cover is pulled away from some of the inside pages. The first two pages and the first pull-out map in the front of the book are loose from the covers. These pages have edge wear and chipping but the map looks very good. There is minor chipping along the right edge of pages 357 to 367. Pages 429 and 459 are not attached to the spine and the right and bottom edges have tiny tears and chipping. The bottom half of the last page of the book is coming away from the spine but it is still attached at the top half.
I'm amazed that the inside pages are still bright and clean and in great condition for being 96 years old.
What a wonderful book of New York City history to give to a member of your family or a friend who may remember some of the sites mentioned in this book. Just imagine New York City at the turn of the century! Anyone who collects books will want to add this book to their collection.
