Today I'm offering for sale this WWII Era 1943 “Junior Commandos” Little Orphan Annie’s Coloring Book created by Harold Gray. This is a Saalfield coloring book, No. 2437, printed with permission by Harold Gray and the Famous Artists Syndicate. The coloring book measures 10 3/4" wide x 15 1/4" long and has 44 pages, 10 of which have been colored on.
Little Orphan Annie made her first appearance as a comic strip in the New York Daily News on August 5th, 1924. With the outbreak of WWII Annie along with her dog Sandy did everything they could to fight evil and enlist the help of kids all across the nation. Annie's Junior Commandos helped in the collection of newspapers, scrap metal and other recyclable materials for the war effort. Kids proudly wore a cloth pack on their shoulder that read, Junior Commandos as they collected scrap. The simple idea from Harold Gray with the help of Annie and her Junior Commandos Club caught on like wild fire. In a short time tens of millions of children and adults across the country took their part in collecting materials for the war effect. She first appeared on WGN radio of Chicago from 1930 through 1942. Radio historian Jim Harmon said it was the only radio show to deal with and appeal to young children.
Remember Ralphie in the Christmas Story and him checking the mail to see if he got his Little Orphan Annie secret Ovaltine Decoder Ring. You can date the movie since the radio show ended in 1942. If you ever get in a disagreement about when the Christmas Story took place you will win that bet.
