After serving in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War, Lt. Col. Anthony B. Herbert published his book titled "Soldier" giving his first-hand experience while serving. The book was written by Anthony B. Herbert Lt. Col., Ret. with the help of James T. Wooten and published and copyrighted in 1973 by Holt, Rinehart and Winston.
A son of a Lithuanian immigrant family from Herminie, Pennsylvania, Anthony enlisted in the Army at age 17 and found himself in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. During the Korean War he built his reputation to become one of the youngest Master Sergeants in the Army and one of the most decorated. In 1968 he was first deployed to the Vietnam War and was assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade. He later commanded the 2nd Battalion(Airborne) 503rd Infantry.
While serving during the Korean War he became one of the most decorated soldiers. During his time in the Army he was awarded 4 Silver Stars, 3 Bronze Star Medals with a V, 6 Battle Stars, and 4 Purple Hearts. He was wounded 14 times---10 by bullets, 3 by a bayonet, and one with white phosphorus. He also received the coveted Turkish Ozanu Order Medal from the President of Turkey.
While serving during the Vietnam War he came forward to report war crimes he said he witnessed. He pressed charges against his commanding officer after he refused to investigate. After trying to get those punished and trying to instigate reforms charges against his superiors were dismissed, he and his family were subject to humiliation and harassment so he retired from the Army at age 41. Throughout the 490 pages he goes into great detail about his life while serving in the Army through good and bad times.
