1954 Betty Crocker's Good and Easy Cook Book
In 1950 Betty Crocker published her first colorful picture cook book which out sold the Holy Bible and became a national first seller. Today I'm offering her second best selling cook book with over 18 million copies sold in 1954 titled "Betty Crocker's Good and Easy Cook Book”. This is a first edition, tenth printing, copyrighted in 1954 by General Mills, Incorporated, and published by Golden Press of New York.
Betty Crocker's popularity started in the 1920's and ‘30's by teaching housewives and the general public how to make simple and delicious meals for their family. During WWII she sold over 7 million war-time booklets on how to make money-saving meals even though food rationing had created hardships for the American family. Her popularity grew throughout the country during WWII and in the 1950's making her more famous then Elvis Presley. Her cook books, in the 1950's, were found in tens of millions of households and many have become very collectible mainly because of the fantastic, triple tested easy to follow yummy recipes that always turned out great.
The book has 256 pages, measures 7 7/8” long x 5 ¾” wide x ¾” thick and is held together by metal spiral rings. The recipes are broken down into breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a fourth section of meals on Birthday Celebrations, Afternoon Teas, Coffee Get-togethers, Dessert Parties, Holiday Open House, Treats for Children, Teen-age Gatherings and Evening Snacks. Also there are 33 very colorful full page photos of how the meals or desserts should look like when it's done.
**Condition: The front and back covers are in good condition, clean and bright. The inside pages are in very good condition, very clean and bright. *Covers: There is light wear near the bottom of the spine, a ½” piece of the top of the spine is missing, and light edge wear along the bottom edge of the cover.
Here's what the Baby Boomers growing up in 1954 had the pleasure to experience: Gas at 21 cents a gallon, T-Bone steaks at 95 cents a pound, milk at 92 cents a gallon, bread at 17 cents a loaf, unemployment at 2.9%, Disneyland premiers on TV, Joe Di Maggio married Marilyn Monroe, the first TV Soap Opera “Secret Storm” debuts, Dragnet and I Love Lucy are the big hits, Elvis records his first hit single "That's all Right", the first Transistor Radio model Regency TR-1 changed our world forever, the Movie White Christmas, first appearance of the game Scrabble, Yahtzee, Lincoln Logs, Wiffle metal and plastic balls and bats, and Match Box Cars.
But even bigger than the Betty Crocker Cook Book was the first TV Dinner made by Swanson Foods for a great price of 98 cents. The turkey dinner was a smash with the public and Swanson went on to sell over 25 million TV Dinners in 1954. I was 5 years old in 1954 and still remember sitting at our kitchen table looking at the oven and getting ready to eat the mystery meal that was cooking in a tin foil tray. With my mouth watering, I put my first fork full of this mystery meal in my mouth. Yum, tasted okay. Betty Crocker had nothing to worry about.
If your mom or a grandparent grew up in the 1950's then this cook book would make a great surprise birthday or Christmas present and bring back some really great memories.
