The New American Advanced Speller Book, 1880. This book has 144 pages and measures 4 7/8” wide x 7 ¼” long x ½” thick. There are six chapters including Key To The Pronunciation---Four Thousand Five Hundred Words Classified and Arranged---Two Thousand Words Not Classified---Eight Hundred Words Common To Most Spelling-Books---Eight Hundred Words Frequently Mispronounced---and One Thousand Five Hundred Test Words. A very interesting spelling book for sure.
**Condition: The front and back covers are in fair condition. The inside pages are in good+ condition. *Covers: There is wear, tears, and pieces missing from the spine; wear to the front and back covers, wear and chipping along all the outer edges of the covers, discoloration along the spine, a ½” round pink stain on the back cover, fading to the covers, and wear and bumps to all the corners of the covers. *Inside pages: There is a 6” tear at the spine edge of the first inside page, two small ¼” tan stains on the first and one small ¼” tan stain on the second inside pages; a tiny stain dot on the third and the fourth inside pages; there is some pencil lines through some words on some inside pages towards the end of the book.
Lippincott’s Popular Series, Fourth Reader by Marcius Willson, with numerous illustrations, 1883. This book has 334 pages and measures 5 ¼” wide x 7 ½” long x 7/8” thick. The third inside page features a Teacher’s Map of Lake-View & Vicinity including Lake Lenapee, The Commons, Lake-View Village, and Fruitland. The book is divided into 42 chapters starting with Chapter I—Winter Sports—The Boys of Lake-View with Illustration, to Chapter XLII---Fairy Island and the Fairies---Who are the Fairies?---The Fairies in Winter---Moonlight and Fairies---A Fairy’s Funeral with Illustration. This book is a most enjoyable read and not just for students---it’s for any age. There are wonderful poems here and there in the book and illustrations as well. There are also leaves and petals of flowers pressed between the pages.
**Condition: The front and back covers are in fair condition. The inside pages are in fair condition. *Covers: There is wear, tears, and pieces missing from the spine; wear to the front and back covers, wear along all the outer edges of the covers, discoloration along the spine, and wear and bumps to all the corners of the covers. *Inside Pages: The first two blank inside pages are missing, there is writing in pencil on the next page, erasure marks on next page, a ½” tear at the left edge of the page with the map on it; there are six pages in the middle of the book that the right edge of each page has chipping, tiny tears, and wear; Those six pages also are not attached to the rest of the book at the spine; there is a small light water stain on pages 321 to 334 at the right edge; the last page is missing from the inside pages.
While these two books are very worn from use, they are both enjoyable to read and look at. It’s just amazing to take a look back in time at how spelling and reading was taught. Two great books to add to your Book Collection!
