A Farewell to Pele`, The Daily News, October 1, 1977
As the World Cup is being played it's not better time to offer for sale the Daily News from Saturday, October 1,1977. This is a special 4 page issue which gives tribute to the world’s greatest soccer player "Pele`". After coming out of retirement Pele` signed with the New York Cosmos in 1975 and played for 2 1/2 years. Playing in his farewell game before a sellout crowd of 75,646 at Giants Stadium he scored his final goal in the first half for the Cosmos then switched jerseys at halftime changing into the club he originally played for, the Santos of Brazil.
Pele was responsible for American's becoming interested and falling in love with a sport that many thought never had a chance to succeed. During Pele`s playing time with the Cosmos Americans saw why countries around the globe loved playing soccer. The four page tribute is filled with Pele`s careers facts along with 6 great photos. The paper measures 10 3/4" x 14 3/4".
**Condition: This paper is in good- condition. There are several small tears along the edges with light yellowing to the paper due to age.
Listed before are some great facts from Pele`s career:
1.) Full name “Edson Arantes Do Nascimento” began playing soccer in a Brazilian minor league at 16. 2.) As the youngest player (17) in the World Cup of 1958 he scored 2 goals to beat Sweden.
3.) Scored Brazil’s 100th World Cup goal with his head in 1970. 4.) Ranked #1 in career goals: 1,280 in 1,360 games.
5.) Holds the record for hat tricks at 92 and most goals scored in international play at 97. 6.) Came out of retirement to play 2 1/2 years with the New York Cosmos.
7.) Inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1993. 8.) The IOC named Pele the Athlete of the Century in 1999.
9.) After his final international game on July 18, 1971, he announced his retirement. 10.) In 1978 he was awarded the International Peace Award.
He signed with the Cosmos for 1.4 million dollars a year. His signing attracted a surge in fans from about 5,000 fans a game it swelled to an average of nearly 40,000 at the gate. Pele and the Cosmos went on to win the Soccer Bowl a record four times.
Those who played against him say it seemed that the ball was somehow attached to his feet as he moved down the field.
Wouldn't be cool if the U.S. played against Brazil in the World Cup and have Pele' award the World Cup to the winner. A great surprise gift for the big soccer fan in your family.
