Today I'm offering for sale a rare souvenir booklet from one of New York City’s most famous restaurants, The Palm Restaurant. The Palm opened in 1926 by owners Pio Bozzi and John Ganzi and is still located at 837 2nd Ave. in New York City. A short distance from the Palm Restaurant was the headquarters of King Features Syndicate which played a big part in making the Restaurant famous. The Palm attracted a large number of cartoonists who worked at King Features who would draw on the walls of the restaurant to get a few pennies off their food bill.
The booklet has 52 pages showing the drawings on the walls, photos of the owners, photos of the cooks preparing food, the bartenders mixing drinks, and reviews that were found in magazines and newspapers. The Palm has become a living museum of caricatures of Popeye, Batman, Belle Bailey, Hagar the Horrible, movie and radio stars, and other cartoon stars of the 1930’s and 1940’s.
In 1995 the walls of the Palm were professionally restored in order to preserve the hand drawn sketches. Bill Steinke is recognized as the first artist to draw on the walls of the Palm. Today the Palm has over 30 fine dining locations throughout the country and a few locations outside the United States. The booklet measures 6 3/4" x 8 5/8".
**Condition: The front and back covers and the inside pages are in very good condition, very clean and bright. The cover has tiny amounts of edge wear, minor wear along the spine, and a tiny piece missing from the top and bottom of the spine.
A wonderful gift for anyone who has eaten at the Palm Restaurant.
